SMOK AL85 Kit Review

The Alien by SMOK has given birth to a baby; an 85W TC infant that has got strong lungs and good head of hair. It’s the Baby 85W TC Box Mod, child of the 220W SMOK Alien with that same hidden firing button, and featured in a kit by SMOK.

“AL” stands for “Alien,” and the “85” signifies how many watts you can achieve. An AL85 only needs one 18650 battery instead of two and this is a removable one. Buy a reliable brand like LG, Sony, or Samsung. Settings start right down at 1W for maximum personalization and precision of vapor production. Choose the TC mode instead, with settings between 200°F and 600°F.

Resistance Is Futile

There can’t be a time when resistance is completely gone, but you won’t even need 1 ohm resistance in your tank to make this SMOK device work beautifully. Give the Baby Alien what it wants with sub-ohm settings and it will not self-destruct before 0.06 ohms or even after.

Should you make a mistake with the atomizer build, it would have to be a doozy to cause your machine to switch off; like 0.04 ohms. Automatic shut-off would be a sign of trouble, and the error code would indicate if this was low resistance, overheating, or what. Although R&D experts shoot for lower and lower values, there has to be some resistance.

Little Baby, Big Attitude

The Alien 85W is a confident machine inside a small body. At only 71 x 48 x 27 mm, that’s seriously compact considering what your mod is capable of. SMOK is working on reducing size while maintaining power as all major manufacturers are.

While the “Baby” is definitely smaller, it’s no push-over in a high-chair either. The Baby has a good memory too, so choose memory mode and it will recall your last setting. Select an actual value, or cheat by selecting hard, normal, or soft to influence inhalation style. Button placement is natural for ease of control.

Baby Beast

The AL85 Kit comes with a Baby Beast Tank, the 22-mm, 3-ml RBA that complements it best. This is a TC/VW compatible tank for use with Ni200, SS, and Ti coils.

Like all Taste Fury tanks, this one features a hinged top cap for simple and mess-free refills. It’s made with glass and steel, all durable, neutral, and heat-resistant. The tank might be heavier than its battery base which is made from a zinc alloy.

Adjust airflow from the base using dual controls. At the top, SMOK features a Delrin tip, extra-wide, and colored black. This will let out super-thick clouds but also reduce the risk of burning your lips because Delrin is an insulator.

SMOKTECH coils provide their special turbo design which draws air up to maximize vapor and flavor. Select 0.2 ohms or the Q2 for up to 80W, 0.15-ohm X4 or Quad coils for 70W, or an Octuple coil, also 0.15 ohms, recommended for up to 80W but capable of 100W. A double-post RBA deck is also available for your personal builds.

The SMOK AL85 Kit

Each package contains the mod and Baby Beast 22-mm tank. Other items inside the kit will be a pair of V8 Q2 coil heads, a USB cable for recharging and updating firmware, and spares for the small parts that get lost when you clean dust out of the battery bank or completely dismantle the tank to wash it out.

Buy this kit in gold, red, silver, or gunmetal gray for a show of color at the bottom. Tanks are sold in black or silver and your O-rings might be black or red. Red or gold mods are really black with accents, not fully gold or red.

Within the lines these accents form is an OLED screen in the shape of an off-centered diamond featuring big numbers, all your settings, and an icon showing how much charge remains in your battery.
