Electronic Cigarette Association Requires Members to Include Product Warnings

Washington, DC, September 24th, 2009 – The Electronic Cigarette Association (ECA) announced that it will now require its members to include specific warnings to prevent inappropriate and unauthorized use of their products.

“Our members have readily agreed to include these warnings because of their commitment to the safe and proper use of their products,” said ECA President Matt Salmon. “Our members only want their products to be used by long-term, adult consumers looking for an alternative to combustible cigarettes.”

ECA is an organization that establishes and enforces standards and practices of good conduct and marketing guidelines among electronic cigarette suppliers. The Association requires that the product warnings include the following specific language:

“Warning! Nicotine is an addictive substance. This product has not been approved by the U.S. FDA as a smoking cessation product. This product is simply an alternative to tobacco smoking and should only be used by long-term smokers. This product is not a smoking cessation device. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, prevent, cure, or mitigate any disease or medical condition or offer any therapeutic benefit. Do not use this product if you are under the legal age of smoking or if you are sensitive to nicotine or inhalants. Do not use this product if you have or if you are at risk of having any respiratory conditions, heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes. Consult your doctor before use if you have any medical conditions. Do not use if you are pregnant or nursing. Discontinue use of this product immediately if you experience symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, a weak or rapid heartbeat, vomiting, diarrhea, or any negative physical symptom. Keep product away from children and pets.”

This action follows other proactive efforts by the ECA. Last month, Salmon sent a letter to congressional lawmakers on behalf of the ECA, urging them to support legislation prohibiting the sale of electronic cigarettes to anyone under the legal smoking age.

Salmon encourages consumers to purchase products displaying the ECA Seal. Suppliers who use this seal have agreed not to make any health claims or market their product as a smoking cessation device. Additionally, they commit to take precautions to prevent underage consumers from purchasing their products.
